Australian Cattle Dogs - Health Concerns
What health issues are associated with Australian Cattle Dogs?
Australian Cattle Dogs have a disease that is very specialized to this breed. South Haven Farm carefully monitors our breeding program to insure that none of our pups are every affected by this disease.
Progressive Retinal Atrophy is a disease that can cause early congenital blindness in ACDs. There is a DNA test to determine whether an ACD is either Clear (A), a Carrier (B) or a possible affected dog (C). Each of these cases can be bred if knowledge is used carefully. There are some dogs that may be a "C" that are so nice that we do not want to take them out of the gene pool. That can happen with careful breeding.
At South Haven Farm, our breeding program guarantees that our pups will either be an "A" - Clear, or a "B" - Carrier. As a pet, that means that our pups will never contract this disease.
Please contact us for any questions or concerns that you have about PRA.
It is not uncommon for an ACD to be deaf. South Haven Farm performs individual stimuli testing to insure that our pups are not deaf. Our breeding stock has been BAER tested for hearing.
